Holding the Impossible in My Hands – A Testament to Courage

Writer: Deniz Kayadelen Deniz Kayadelen

I didn’t start this journey with unshakable confidence. In fact, I questioned everything. Would my body handle the extreme altitude? Would I have the strength to endure the freezing water? Would I even make it to the summit after days of exhaustion, hunger, and cold pressing against my limits?

There were no guarantees. No certainty. Just a deep pull inside me to try—to step into the unknown despite not having all the answers.

And now, holding this Guinness World Record certificate in my hands, I feel the weight of every moment that brought me here. Every doubt. Every battle against my own mind. Every moment of pushing forward when everything screamed to stop.

This wasn’t just about breaking a record. It was about proving something to myself—and maybe to you too.

A Journey Into the Unknown

Nothing about this expedition went as expected. Instead of flying, we took a brutal 17-hour jeep ride, rattling through rough terrain before we even set foot on the mountain. Then came the altitude—oxygen so thin that every step felt like climbing with a weight on my chest. Nights on ice-cold ground with barely any sleep, our bodies drained from hunger and exhaustion, the simplest movements becoming battles of will.

And yet, the biggest surprise awaited us at 6,405 meters. We had expected to find a natural body of water, but there was none. Instead, 30 Sherpas built the highest-altitude swimming pool in history, carving through the ice and melting water in massive drums to keep it liquid overnight.

We covered it with canvas to stop it from refreezing. And then, at dawn, we uncovered it, knowing what came next.

Three minutes. Ice-cold water at 3.7°C, air temperature at -6°C. My body screaming at me to get out, my mind whispering, you can’t do this.

But I could. And I did.

Because in the end, that’s what matters—not whether you feel ready, not whether the fear disappears, but whether you choose to take the next step anyway.

Courage Over Confidence

We wait too long to feel ready. We tell ourselves we need more certainty, more preparation, more time. But confidence isn’t what carries you forward—courage is.

  • Courage to begin before you feel prepared.

  • Courage to embrace the unknown instead of fearing it.

  • Courage to trust that the path will reveal itself, step by step.

I held onto that courage at 6,405 meters. And now, I hold this certificate as proof—not of a record, but of what happens when you stop letting fear decide for you.
