Expanding my comfort zone has always been a priority for me, but crossing the Catalina
Channel was a profound milestone in my journey. This time, I didn’t need the guidance of my spiritual coach. This experience not only tested my physical limits but also provided deep reflections that I want to share with you, hoping to inspire others to step beyond their comfort zones.
In my book, I discuss the importance of pushing boundaries. The more we venture out of our comfort zones, the more those zones expand, enabling us to thrive in situations we once thought impossible. Three years ago, the idea of crossing the English Channel seemed beyond my capabilities. Adding the challenge of swimming, the Catalina Channel, notorious for its shark-infested waters, felt entirely unattainable. The thought of swimming for more than 10 hours, especially while managing my intense fear of sharks, was daunting.
However, after conquering the English Channel in 15 hours under 16-17-degree conditions, the prospect of tackling the Catalina Channel, with its relatively warmer 20-degree waters, seemed less intimidating. Yet, the fear of sharks remained a significant hurdle. Overcoming this fear required a mental shift, learning to calm my mind, and focusing on my dream despite the lurking anxiety. How often do we feel anxious and don't follow our dreams, allowing ourselves to be dominated by our fears?
Swimming for 8 hours in darkness was a journey of self-discovery and a mind game. People often seek self-awareness through prolonged solitude in the mountains, long walks in deserts, or even multiple months of sabbatical. For me, those 14 hours and 30 minutes in the Catalina Channel became my path to inner enlightenment. The goal was not just to reach the finish line but to immerse myself fully in the journey.
Swimming in the darkness, isolated from even the comforting eye contact of my trainer or support team, I felt the eerie brush of jellyfish against my skin, not knowing what else was around me. In those moments, I encountered the unexpected beauty of dolphins swimming beneath me, their presence a magical reminder of nature’s wonders.
Exhaustion tested my resolve, and I questioned my motives, feeling the weight of my
fluctuating emotions. There were moments when I wanted to quit, but I found strength in
confronting and overcoming my inner demons. Each stroke, each breath, taken next to the guiding kayak was a testament to my determination to persevere. It was about facing my limiting beliefs, emerging stronger from the experience, and learning to appreciate every moment despite the pain and challenges.
Believing in a higher purpose provided the strength to continue. This purpose, although
intangible and invisible, was a powerful force driving me forward. It didn’t offer immediate
answers to my questions but, more importantly fueled me to continue this journey. What’s your purpose in life? What would keep you going despite your inner demons?
Mindset Strategies for Pushing Your Limits
1. Set Clear, Incremental Goals: Break your ultimate goal into smaller,
manageable milestones. Achieving these smaller goals builds confidence and momentum. For instance, if you want to swim long distances, start with shorter swims and gradually increase the distance. Each small victory propels you closer to your ultimate objective.
2. Visualize Success: Regularly visualize yourself achieving your goal. This
mental imagery can enhance motivation and improve performance. Picture yourself
successfully completing each stage of your journey, feeling the emotions of triumph and
satisfaction. This practice helps cement the belief that your goals are attainable.
3. Embrace Discomfort: Accept that discomfort is a part of growth. Instead of
avoiding it, see it as a sign that you are expanding your boundaries. Whether it’s physical
fatigue or mental stress, leaning into discomfort can help you build resilience. Remember, each moment of discomfort is an opportunity for growth.
4. Stay Present: Focus on the present moment rather than the overall distance
or time remaining. This helps in managing overwhelming feelings and keeps you grounded. During challenging times, breaking down the journey into manageable chunks can make it less daunting. Concentrate on the next stroke, the next step, or the next breath.
5. Develop a Mantra: Create a personal mantra or affirmation that you can
repeat to yourself during tough moments. This can provide immediate mental reinforcement. Phrases like “I am strong,” “I can do this,” or “Just keep going” can be powerful tools to keep your mind focused and positive.
6. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who encourage and
support your goals. Their belief in you can bolster your own confidence. Share your
aspirations with friends, family, or mentors who can offer advice, encouragement, and
accountability. A strong support network can make a significant difference in your journey.
7. Reflect and Learn: After each challenge, take time to reflect on what you
learned about yourself. Use these insights to improve and prepare for the next challenge.
Journaling your experiences can provide valuable insights and track your progress over
time. Understanding your strengths and areas for improvement is key to continuous growth.
8. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no
matter how small. This reinforces positive behavior and keeps you motivated. Recognizing your progress, whether it’s completing a training session or overcoming a mental hurdle, helps maintain enthusiasm and commitment.
9. Mindfulness and Meditation: Incorporate mindfulness practices to help
manage stress and maintain focus. Meditation can train your mind to stay calm under
pressure. Techniques such as deep breathing, body scans, and mindful visualization can
enhance your ability to remain centered and composed during challenges.
10. Positive Self-Talk: Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations.
Cultivating a positive internal dialogue can improve resilience and determination. When
faced with doubt or fear, counteract these thoughts with affirmations of your capabilities and past successes. Consistently practicing positive self-talk can reshape your mindset and boost your confidence.
Remember, magic happens outside your comfort zone. Step out, embrace the journey, and discover the extraordinary.
Supporting a Greater Cause
My journey across the Catalina Channel was not just a personal challenge but also an opportunity to support a cause close to my heart. I have partnered with Adalvo to raise awareness and funds for a noble initiative.
